UNCW Provost James Winebrake Appointed President of Coastal Carolina University
Founded in 1947 as Wilmington College, the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has transformed into a prominent doctoral and research institution, currently serving nearly 19,000 students with a dedicated staff of about 2,500 employees. Its coastal setting enhances the vibrant academic experience, encouraging creative inquiry and critical thinking among its students.
UNCW prides itself on offering diverse academic programs designed to help students discover their strengths and adapt to the evolving demands of the modern world. The university also fosters community engagement and offers extensive support services for current students, alumni, and local community members. Through collaborative applied learning opportunities, students engage closely with faculty in high-quality research projects, enhancing their educational experience.
In a significant leadership change, Dr. James J. Winebrake, who has served as provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at UNCW, has accepted the position of president at Coastal Carolina University, set to commence on July 7, as announced today by Coastal Carolina. This institution has established itself as a leading sea-grant and space-grant university, focused on providing transformative educational experiences through practical research and academic support, with an enrollment of over 11,000 students across seven academic colleges.
Chancellor Aswani K. Volety praised Winebrake's tenure at UNCW, stating, "Provost Winebrake’s steadfast leadership, innovative problem-solving, and deep commitment to academic excellence will make him a tremendous asset to Coastal Carolina. He leaves a lasting legacy at UNCW, and we wish him continued success in this new role. Once a Seahawk, always a Seahawk—soar high, soar far, soar together!"
Since joining UNCW in July 2020, Winebrake faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic head-on, collaborating with university leaders to guide the institution through unprecedented times. Under his leadership, the Provost’s Cabinet initiated notable advancements, including:
- Establishment of two new colleges from the former College of Arts and Sciences.
- Record growth in student enrollment and retention rates.
- Transition to a newly designated R2 research institution, marked by increased sponsored research and the establishment of two new strategic research hubs.
- The approval of multiple new academic programs, such as doctorates in applied coastal and ocean sciences, pharmaceutical chemistry, and physical therapy, as well as bachelor’s degrees in cybersecurity and software engineering.
Additionally, Winebrake co-led the Strategic Planning Steering Committee that set forth a new 10-year strategic plan titled "Soar Higher in 2023." Winebrake expressed bittersweet sentiments about leaving UNCW, saying, "Although I am excited to join the great community at Coastal Carolina University, I know I am going to miss what makes UNCW such a special place—its people." He acknowledged the unwavering support from Chancellor Volety and the collaborative spirit reflected in the university's community.
In the wake of this transition, UNCW is expected to announce the next steps to fill the role of provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, including the appointment of an interim leader, in the near future.
