Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna's tragic death raises concerns over human rights abuses in Russian captivity

Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna was captured in the summer of 2023 near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station. Her family learned of her death via a letter from Russian authorities in October 2024, which provided no further details about the circumstances of her passing. In February 2024, Russia handed over the bodies of 757 Ukrainians to Kyiv, including Roshchyna's, which was misidentified in Russian records as an 'unidentified male.' Forensic examinations in Ukraine revealed that Roshchyna’s body sustained multiple injuries and had undergone an autopsy in Russia prior to its return. Pathologists identified that she had signs of severe abuse, including abrasions, bruises, a broken rib, and indications of torture, such as possible electric shock and a bruised neck with a suspected hyoid bone fracture — indicative of strangulation. Notably, several organs were missing from her body, further complicating the investigation into the precise cause of death. During a daily briefing, European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper condemned the findings regarding Roshchyna's death as compelling evidence of the Russian regime's brutality towards Ukrainians, labeling the conditions under occupation as life-threatening for individuals, particularly journalists. Hipper stated, 'Russia does not miss any opportunity to show its despicable brutality towards the Ukrainians,' highlighting the broader implications of Roshchyna’s fate in the context of war crimes committed against civilians during the conflict in Ukraine.
