SAN DIEGO — New Developments on Plane Crash in Tierrasanta

New information is emerging regarding the catastrophic plane crash that occurred early Thursday morning in the Tierrasanta neighborhood of San Diego, which devastated multiple homes and displaced hundreds of residents.

The aircraft involved, a Cessna Citation manufactured in 1985 with tail number N666DS, is registered to Daviator LLC, a limited liability company based in Homer, Alaska, a location more than 200 miles south of Anchorage. The sole employee and manager of Daviator LLC is David Shapiro, a 42-year-old resident of El Cajon, California.

David Shapiro has held a certified flight instructor's license since 2010, according to records from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Despite efforts to contact him, his listed phone number directed calls to voicemail, and it remains unclear if Shapiro was piloting the plane during the tragic incident. 

Crash Details and Immediate Aftermath

The collision occurred around 4 a.m. near the intersection of Sample and Salmon Streets. Reports indicate that at least 15 homes were impacted, with numerous injuries reported, although fortunately, no residents required hospitalization.

In reaction to the incident, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) has undertaken the evacuation of multiple neighborhoods surrounding the crash site. As firefighters work diligently to assess the damage and ensure resident safety, they have confirmed that the damaged residences are situated within a military housing development.

Approximately 100 residents were displaced due to precautionary evacuations as officials carefully assessed the affected homes. The full scope of damage is still being evaluated by emergency personnel.

Heroic Efforts from the Community

In the wake of the crash, the bravery of local military members has come to light. Chief Damage Controlman Gilbert Gonzalez of the U.S. Navy recounted the harrowing experience, describing how the loud explosion jolted residents from their sleep. He rushed outside to find a chaotic scene dominated by fire and destruction.

Gonzalez, displaying remarkable leadership and heroism, sprang into action to check on neighbors, and he was joined by others from the community. Together, they worked tirelessly to rescue families and their pets from a burning environment. Acknowledging their training, Gonzalez noted that they were prepared for such emergencies, emphasizing the strong bond within their community.

The Ongoing Investigation

As the investigation progresses, details about the individuals on board the Cessna remain unclear. Emergency responders acted quickly upon receiving reports of the downed aircraft, which revealed multiple homes catching fire. Firefighters managed to control the flames while police officers conducted evacuations in the immediate and neighboring areas.

Tragically, initial reports indicate that there were no survivors from those aboard the aircraft. In response to the disaster, two local elementary schools canceled classes for the day, with Miller Elementary also serving as a temporary shelter for displaced families.
