Tragic M5 Collision Claims Lives and Leaves Child in Critical Condition

Tragic M5 Collision Claims Lives and Leaves Child in Critical Condition

A devastating single-vehicle crash on the M5 motorway in south Gloucestershire has resulted in the loss of three lives and left a child in critical condition. The incident, which occurred around 9pm on Friday, involved a white BMW that veered off the northbound carriageway between junctions 14 and the Michaelwood services.

Tragically, two adults in their 40s and a teenager have been confirmed dead, with emergency services rushing a second child to the hospital due to serious injuries. As the investigation continues, the M5 remains closed in both directions between junctions 13 and 14, creating significant delays, especially following the recent half-term break.

Inspector Mark Vicary from Avon and Somerset Police's roads policing unit expressed his heartfelt condolences, stating, "Our thoughts first and foremost are with the child in hospital and loved ones who have received the most awful news overnight. A specially-trained officer will provide them with support at this difficult time." This statement underscores the emotional toll that such incidents can impose on families and communities.

The inspector went on to highlight the commendable effort put forth by emergency personnel, noting their diligent and professional response amid a complex scene. "They have worked throughout the night at what has proved to be a very complex scene, trying to save lives in the most tragic of circumstances," he added. This situation reflects the challenging dynamics that emergency services face when responding to serious traffic collisions.

In light of the ongoing investigation, law enforcement officials are appealing to witnesses and those with dashcam footage to come forward, which may assist in piecing together the events leading to this tragic occurrence. The public's cooperation can be vital in understanding and preventing future incidents.

Inspector Vicary also acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the motorway closure, urging travelers to consider alternative routes. He appealed to the public, saying, "But given the severity of this distressing incident, we hope the public can understand the reasons why this is necessary and ask them to consider alternative travel plans." This highlights the balance that authorities must maintain between public safety and operational logistics.
