JERUSALEM – A Dire Situation
In a harrowing escalation of violence, dozens of Palestinians have lost their lives and hundreds more have been injured today while waiting for food at the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution centres in Rafah and near the Netzarim Corridor. The Ministry of Health has reported these devastating numbers as the situation in the region deteriorates.
Medical teams from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have mobilized to assist with the mass casualty response at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Eyewitness accounts from patients revealed the chaotic scene, with individuals caught in crossfire from drones, helicopters, boats, tanks, and ground troops.
Criticism of Aid Delivery Systems
Claire Manera, the MSF emergency coordinator, expressed grave concerns over the new system of aid distribution that has proven to be “dehumanizing, dangerous, and severely ineffective.” She emphasized that the rate of civilian deaths and injuries could have been averted. Manera called for humanitarian aid to be delivered solely by organizations with the capacity and commitment to ensure safety and efficacy.
Today at Nasser hospital, medical teams faced overwhelming challenges as they treated numerous patients suffering from severe injuries. With blood shortages reaching critical levels, medical staff were compelled to donate their own blood to save lives.
A Hospital in Crisis
Nour Alsaqa, a communication officer from MSF, described the dire situation within the hospital, noting that the corridors were filled with patients, predominantly men this time, in contrast to previous instances where women and children made up the majority of those injured.
“They looked shattered and distraught after trying to secure food for their children, returning instead injured and empty handed,” Alsaqa recounted. She further mentioned the chaotic atmosphere outside, filled with voices shouting, sirens blaring, and a continuous influx of new casualties entering the emergency room.
The Fight for Survival
Testimonies from individuals caught in the chaos paint a devastating portrait of desperation. Mansour Sami Abdi, a father of four, recounted how people scrambled for five pallets of food. He said, “They told us to take food—then they fired from every direction.” Abdi fled 200 meters before realizing he had been shot, expressing his disillusionment with the aid process by stating, “This isn’t aid. It’s a lie.”
Another individual, Mohammad Daghmeh, living in Al-Qarara, described a harrowing experience of being shot while trying to escape, witnessing the death of a companion who had tried to help him.
A Cumulative Crisis
This incident is not isolated; it marks the second occurrence where aid distribution has resulted in significant bloodshed. Just weeks prior on May 27, during the initial distribution in Rafah, Israeli forces shot at dozens who were simply trying to access much-needed supplies amid overwhelming chaos and limited resources.
Currently, the entirety of Gaza faces famine risk as a result of a total siege imposed by Israeli authorities. Since March, the humanitarian landscape has dangerously worsened, with the United Nations reporting that over two million residents have been largely deprived of food, water, and medical supplies for the past three months. The blockade and restriction of humanitarian aid into Gaza has exacerbated the dire situation.
Call for Action
MSF warns that the systematic weaponization of aid delivery constitutes potential crimes against humanity. They stress the immediate need for a ceasefire and the opening of Gaza’s borders to facilitate the unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance, including essential food, medical supplies, fuel, and equipment, to alleviate this man-made disaster.
