Wednesday's joyous celebration of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL 2025 title victory turned tragic as a stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals. This incident unfolded immediately after RCB triumphed over Punjab Kings, marking their first IPL title win in 18 years, a moment many anticipated would lead to widespread joy and festivities.

With celebrations planned that included an open bus parade to welcome the cricket stars back to Bengaluru, an overwhelming turnout of nearly 200,000 fans was reported. However, the significant crowd became uncontrollable, leading to chaos that ultimately resulted in not just fatalities but also injuries to over 45 fans.

Virat Kohli, a prominent figure in RCB's success and a beloved cricket personality, expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, "At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted." His sentiment resonated with many fans as they processed the terrible turn of events.

In an official statement from RCB, the organization expressed their anguish regarding the tragedy. "We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team's arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us," the statement read. They conveyed condolences to the affected families and indicated that they adjusted their program upon learning of the situation.

Prominent figures from the cricketing world, including India’s legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, also took to social media to mourn the loss of life. Tendulkar described the events at the stadium as "beyond tragic" and extended his sympathies to the affected families, calling for peace and strength in the aftermath.

Moreover, former Indian spinner Anil Kumble highlighted the somberness of the day for cricket, urging for recovery for those injured and mourning the loss of life during a celebration intended to honor success and joy.

In response to the tragedy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference to address the situation. He confirmed that 11 individuals had lost their lives and 33 sustained injuries. The government pledged to cover the medical expenses of the injured and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased.
