Tragedy Strikes Khan Younis Doctor's Family Amid Ongoing Conflict

A devastating Israeli strike has resulted in the near-total loss of a family in Khan Younis, Gaza, as reported by health officials from the region. The tragic incident unfolded while Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, a dedicated paediatrician working at Nasser Hospital, was absent from home, attending to her duties.

The attack occurred on Friday when a missile struck the al-Najjar residence, igniting a catastrophic fire that killed nine of her ten children, aged between just seven months and 12 years. Two of these children remain trapped under the rubble, and their identities have been released by Gaza's Government Media Office, revealing their names as Sidar, Luqman, Sadin, Reval, Ruslan, Jubran, Eve, Rakan, and Yahya.

Dr. al-Najjar's husband suffered critical injuries in the assault, sustaining severe chest and head wounds, including a skull fracture. He is currently receiving intensive medical treatment at the same hospital where his wife works. Their only surviving son, 11-year-old Adam, is also severely injured and is being monitored in the moderate ICU department alongside his mother.

Ahmad al-Farra, head of the paediatrics department at Nasser Hospital, expressed his disbelief over the tragedy, acknowledging the profound shock experienced by Dr. al-Najjar upon learning about the fate of her family. He underscored the gravity of this loss, urging the international community to lend their voice to the voiceless victims of such violence. “These children have no voice. Their mother is in shock,” al-Farra stated. “Please, I ask everyone to be her voice in this world.”

The incident has sparked outrage internationally, with the UN's special rapporteur for the Palestinian territory, Francesca Albanese, denouncing the attack as indicative of a disturbing trend towards violence against civilians. She characterized the targeting of families in residential buildings as part of a troubling new phase of violence against Palestinians, describing it as a “sadistic pattern” that may constitute a form of genocide.

In response to the tragedy, Hamas accused Israel of routinely targeting civilian personnel, including medical professionals, and their family members in an effort to undermine their resolve.

The Israeli military, on the other hand, justified the strike by asserting that it targeted suspected fighters operating within the vicinity of the attack. They noted that the claim concerning damage to uninvolved civilians is currently under review.

Compounding the ongoing crisis, Israel has issued forced evacuation orders for Khan Younis, signaling the potential for further escalated military action, which has already resulted in a continuous barrage of attacks. On the day of the al-Najjar family's tragedy alone, Gaza's Health Ministry reported at least 79 fatalities from airstrikes conducted between Friday and Saturday. The total death toll resulting from the ongoing conflict since October 2023 is estimated at nearly 54,000, with over 122,000 wounded.

This tragic event serves not only as a personal loss for Dr. al-Najjar but also highlights the broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where families continue to bear the brunt of relentless violence.
