Sony Slashes PlayStation 5 Prices Ahead of Nintendo Switch 2 Launch

PlayStation 5 Price Cuts During Days of Play 2025

Sony has officially announced a significant reduction in prices for its popular PlayStation 5 (PS5) console as part of their annual Days of Play 2025 event, which kicks off on May 28. This proactive measure seems aimed at maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving gaming market, particularly with substantial announcements from Microsoft and upcoming releases from Nintendo.

During the Days of Play event, Sony will offer the PS5 bundled with Call of Duty 6 at a striking price of $399.99, which represents a substantial discount of $119.99 off the average sale price. Additional discounts will also be applied to related products, such as:

  • $50 off PlayStation 5 Pro consoles
  • $30 off the PS VR2 headset and bundle
  • $30 off DualSense edge controllers

This year’s Days of Play event holds particular significance as it comes at a time of notable uncertainty within the console gaming market. With the Nintendo Switch 2 preparing for its launch as well as Microsoft’s recent decisions concerning price hikes, market dynamics are shifting.

Competitors Adjust Strategies

In contrast to Sony’s price drop, Microsoft recently announced a price increase for its Xbox Series X console, which rose from $499.99 to $599.99. This change, effective from May 1, indicates a strategic response focusing on efficiency, particularly in light of recent employee layoffs.

Meanwhile, Nintendo is continuing to accept pre-orders for its anticipated Switch 2, set to release on June 5. The new model is priced at $449.99, which reflects a $150 increase over the original Switch. Alongside this, game prices are also projected to rise from $59.99 to $79.99.

June 11, providing consumers with ample opportunity to take advantage of these current discounts.

In conclusion, Sony's proactive pricing strategy demonstrates a keen awareness of market pressures and a strategic positioning ahead of fierce competition from Microsoft and Nintendo. Stay tuned for updates as the gaming industry navigates these changes.
