Significant Road Closure in El Paso: I-10 Traffic Switch Scheduled This Weekend

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a significant road closure on I-10 set to begin this weekend, from 4 a.m. Saturday, April 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, April 28. This 49-hour closure will affect the stretch between Redd Road and Mesa Street to facilitate a traffic switch, which is an essential part of the ongoing I-10 Widening West Project. During this closure, TxDOT’s Lauren Macias-Cervantes explained that crews will work on moving traffic to new inside lanes while cleaning drainage slots and finalizing concrete rail sections. Notably, this traffic switch marks a pivotal point in the construction, as it allows crews to begin work on the outside lanes as well as the new bypass lanes under the Thorn Bridge, which is undergoing enhancement with widened features and improved pedestrian safety elements. Drivers should take note of the detours, which redirect eastbound traffic via Redd Road and south desert routes, while westbound vehicles will be guided through Mesa to North Desert until after Redd. These changes are anticipated to prompt delays, hence TxDOT urges drivers to allow extra travel time and utilize alternate routes where possible, such as Loop and Doniphan, to navigate around the construction zone. Following this weekend’s traffic switch, ongoing overnight closures will occur every night from April 28 through May 19, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, impacting Redd Road. The ongoing construction and improvements aim for completion later this year, with TxDOT committed to minimizing disruption while enhancing roadway safety and efficiency in the long run. In light of the continuous construction, it’s crucial for local drivers to stay informed about traffic updates to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure safe travel during this transition period.
