The next installment of the iconic horror franchise, Scream 7, is poised to bring back one of its most beloved characters, Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell. In Scream VI, Sidney was notably absent, with her absence acknowledged when Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) referenced taking her children "somewhere safe" due to the ongoing dangers in the series. The baton had seemingly passed to the Carpenter sisters, Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega), whose connection to the franchise lineage was rooted deeply in the legacy of the original Ghostface, Billy Loomis.

However, with both Barrera and Ortega now out of the picture—Barrera due to her dismissal following controversial comments regarding the Israel-Hamas war—Scream 7 has to rethink its core narrative structure. Screenwriter Guy Busick confirmed in a recent interview that the initial storyline involving the two sisters was scrapped entirely. "We weren’t able to use what we had in the previous iteration for this one,” Busick stated. “We just had to start from scratch, which was a bummer."

Despite the setbacks, Busick notes the longstanding desire to create a movie centered around Sidney Prescott. "We always wanted to do a Sidney movie and so it was like, ‘All right, let’s get into it and why now and why this one?’" The decision to focus on Sidney after Gale's assertion in the previous installment—that she deserves a happy ending—creates interesting thematic layers for the narrative’s return.

Busick elaborates on the driving reasons behind this shift. With Scream 7, the franchise seems to delve into discussions about the evolving nature of horror sequels, particularly the resurgence of legacy characters in contemporary cinema. This is a commentary reflected in trends seen in other franchise revivals, such as those in Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which have reignited fan interest through nostalgia.

"There is a really specific reason why Sidney is in this movie," Busick shares, hinting at a complex and engaging motivation behind her return. Busy behind the scenes, he and his collaborator James Vanderbilt have crafted a narrative that respects the established lore while injecting fresh dynamics. Particularly, they managed to interweave the Meeks-Martin twins into this new narrative thread through Gale, illustrating how deeply interconnected these characters remain.

As for the location? It remains uncertain. While we know it is not set in New York like the last film, Busick has hinted at a possibly different town where Sidney is in hiding, after a considerable lapse of time since the last events unfolded. He anticipates this setting will resonate with fans as part of the larger lore established in previous films.

In a surprising twist, former characters previously thought dead will return, including Dewey Riley portrayed by David Arquette, alongside other familiar faces like Matthew Lillard's Stu Macher, which adds to the intrigue and continuous thread of suspense within the franchise. Moreover, new characters will be introduced, including Sidney’s husband Mark, played by Joel McHale, and daughter Isabel May, signaling a shift toward deeper familial narratives.
