COLUMBIA, S.C. — In a decisive move reflecting the confidence in his capabilities, the Richland One Board of School Commissioners voted unanimously on Friday to extend an offer for the position of superintendent to Dr. Todd Anthony Walker, pending contract negotiations. This critical decision marks a new chapter for the district, as the board is proposing a three-year term of employment that extends through June 30, 2028, with a considerable annual salary of $235,000.

Currently serving as the chief curriculum and instruction officer for Columbus City Schools in Ohio, Dr. Walker was selected from a pool of 42 applicants across 12 states, ultimately being named one of the three finalists. This rigorous selection process underscores the board's commitment to finding a leader who can effectively guide the district's educational vision.

Dr. Walker's career in education has been marked by a progressive trajectory, beginning in 2000 as a high school English teacher before advancing to significant leadership roles. Notably, he has served as the director and high school principal of the Columbus Africentric Early College PK-12 campus. His extensive experience and commitment to educational excellence make him a strong candidate for the challenges faced in the Richland district.

Academically, Walker is well-prepared; he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, a Master of Education in English education, and a Doctor of Philosophy in education policy and leadership, all obtained from Ohio State University. Additionally, he has a Juris Doctorate degree in governance and negotiation from Capital University Law School, demonstrating a well-rounded expertise that is essential for effective educational leadership.

Richland One Board Chairman Robert Lominack expressed his gratitude towards the community for their engagement during this selection process, stating, "It has been invaluable and has demonstrated how much our stakeholders care about this district." His remarks highlight the collaborative effort involved in selecting the new superintendent, which included multiple community forums, focus groups, and direct engagement with candidates.

To facilitate Dr. Walker's transition into this new role, the board enlisted the services of BWP & Associates, a search firm tasked with conducting a thorough national search. The search engaged the community through an online survey, forums, and direct meetings, which allowed stakeholders to become involved in the decision-making process.

Once contract negotiations are finalized and board approval is obtained, the next step will involve organizing a meet-and-greet event that will allow students, staff, parents, and community members the chance to connect with Dr. Walker personally.
