In the early hours of Saturday morning, residents across western New South Wales were jolted awake by a "significant" 5.2 magnitude earthquake. Occurring just after 2:30 AM, the quake originated in a remote area of the Orana region near Dubbo, its effects reverberating as far as Sydney.

The tremors began with the initial quake, followed closely by a magnitude 4.2 aftershock that struck a mere seven minutes later. Later in the morning, another aftershock measuring 3.6 was felt around 5:30 AM. As the day progressed, residents experienced further aftershocks—a 3.0 tremor at approximately 11:46 AM, and a subsequent 3.5 around 1:03 PM.

Senior seismologist Trevor Allen characterized the seismic event as significant and noted that hundreds of people had reported feeling the tremors. Specifically, reports on the Geoscience Australia website indicated that more than 250 individuals acknowledged experiencing the quake. Many of these reports originated from Dubbo, located about 200 kilometers southeast, and even from Sydney, which lies approximately 500 kilometers away.

Dr. Allen explained that while the quake was felt over considerable distances, most resident reports indicated relatively light levels of ground shaking. Thus, it was anticipated that little to no structural damage would arise from this event. The information provided a sense of reassurance amidst the unsettling experience.

One resident from Forbes shared, "I felt my floor vibrate twice about ten minutes apart, thought there was something under my house." A resident in Coonamble commented that their dogs had reacted nervously, waking the family, as they felt the bed shake after noticing a loud rattle. In Nyngan, a resident recounted a moment of confusion, expressing how they initially thought it was a train causing the unusual vibrations.
