Rescue Operation Underway After Car Plunges into Parramatta River

A dramatic rescue operation is currently taking place after a car inexplicably drove into the Parramatta River in Greenwich, Sydney, just before 4:20 PM on Monday. The car accelerated off a park and struck a 74-year-old woman who was standing near the riverbank, pushing her into the water as the vehicle entered the river. Fortunately, two passers-by intervened heroically. One jumped from a five-meter drop to assist the woman, while another witness also entered the water to help. The woman was subsequently rescued and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with serious injuries, including a suspected broken ankle. Currently, police divers from the NSW Water Police and local Dive Units are searching for the missing driver, who has not been accounted for after the car reportedly floated away, filling with water. Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry has expressed grave concerns regarding the fate of the unaccounted person. The Parramatta River reaches depths of around 10 meters at Manns Point, an area popular for recreational activities like fishing and sailing. This incident underscores the inherent dangers that can arise unexpectedly and highlights the importance of quick action from bystanders in emergencies. It raises questions about vehicle control near such accessible bodies of water and the pressing need for safety measures at popular public spots like Manns Point. As the search continues, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers, ensuring strict anonymity in the reporting process. In conclusion, this incident serves as a stark reminder of how rapidly situations can escalate and the importance of being vigilant in environments where safety could be compromised. The efforts of the passers-by have shown that community action can often be pivotal in emergencies, potentially saving lives while awaiting professional help.
