New York's SUNY Reconnect Program Offers Free Education for Adults

In a significant move to increase educational accessibility, the State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor John B. King Jr. has announced the upcoming implementation of Governor Kathy Hochul’s SUNY Reconnect program. This initiative, set to commence in Fall 2025, will provide free tuition, fees, books, and supplies for adults aged 25 to 55 who lack a college degree and seek to earn an associate degree in high-demand fields.

The SUNY Reconnect program, recently approved in the FY25-26 budget, aims to cover educational costs after all available financial aid, including the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), has been applied. Participants must be residents of New York, be within the specified age range, and enroll in degree programs either full-time or part-time.

Chancellor King emphasized the program's capacity to open educational pathways for approximately four million working-age adults in New York who currently do not hold a college degree. "By removing financial barriers, this initiative offers the chance for New Yorkers to earn degrees in fields where there is a significant demand for qualified professionals," he stated.

The program has garnered bipartisan support within the state legislature, showcasing its collective endorsement across party lines. State Senator Rob Rolison expressed his support, describing the program as an investment in people and futures. He remarked, "This initiative gives more New Yorkers the chance to earn a degree in a high-demand field, build a meaningful career, and reach their full potential."

Furthermore, State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson highlighted that during these rapidly changing economic times, retraining will be necessary for workers. He believes that this program will aid those wishing to explore new opportunities without the hurdle of tuition costs.

Leading community college officials are already gearing up to assist prospective students. SUNY Orange President Dr. Kristine Young has pledged that campuses will welcome these new learners, guide them through the admissions process, and provide support in the classroom and beyond.

State Senator Michelle Hinchey described community colleges as pivotal bridges to sustainable careers and noted the positive implications of making education available at no cost for adult learners. She anticipates that this program will not only improve individual success stories but also serve as a catalyst for the local job markets, particularly in rural and upstate areas.

SUNY Reconnect is limited to Fields of study that are in high demand, including but not limited to semiconductor technologies, advanced manufacturing, and renewable energy. Community colleges will host information sessions throughout the summer for interested individuals seeking to enroll.
