Man Charged After Alleged Carjacking Outside Berwick Hospital Leaves Woman in Critical Condition

In a distressing incident on Wednesday morning, a 25-year-old man was charged with multiple offenses following an alleged carjacking that resulted in serious injuries to a 66-year-old woman outside Berwick Hospital, located in Melbourne's southeastern suburbs. According to initial reports, the man, said to be of no fixed address, entered the vehicle of Mary Iviglia while she was dropping off her husband for surgery. In her attempt to retrieve her vehicle, Mary was allegedly struck by the accused, resulting in her sustaining a punctured lung, broken ribs, and various cuts and bruises. This brutal act has left her in serious but stable condition at The Alfred Hospital, where her family remains hopeful for her recovery. The accused, identified as Adam Barry, was apprehended later that day over 50 kilometers from the scene. Authorities charged him with stealing a motor vehicle, dangerous driving that caused serious injury, and several other offenses. His first appearance in Dandenong Magistrates Court ended with him being remanded in custody as he awaits his next court date in May. Barry’s defense attorney presented a list of injuries that Barry claimed would require medical attention during his custody, although no details on those were clear. Local MP and Opposition Leader Brad Battin voiced his concerns about the growing violence occurring near hospitals, emphasizing the need for more security measures at such critical care locations. Monash Health, the organization overseeing Casey Hospital, expressed its shock and concern over the incident, characterizing it as an attack on a space meant for healing and care. This incident not only raises questions about public safety in hospital precincts but also shines a light on the rising concerns surrounding personal safety in our communities, especially in places where vulnerable individuals seek medical attention. The community hopes for swift justice for Mary and an urgent evaluation of security protocols at healthcare facilities to prevent such heinous acts from occurring in the future.
