Recent reports from the Associated Press indicate that prosecutors have initiated an investigation into potential misuses of Medicaid funds associated with this organization.

A custodian of public records within the office of Second Judicial Circuit State Attorney Jack Campbell confirmed the existence of this ongoing investigation. The inquiry has garnered attention as two Florida lawmakers, representative Kathy Castor and Darren Soto, have formally called for an investigation by federal authorities, specifically the Department of Health and Human Services and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Castor and Soto's request stems from allegations that $10 million intended for Medicaid settled funds was improperly diverted through the Hope Florida Foundation, allegedly violating federal law. Details revealed that approximately $8.5 million from the Centene settlement was redirected to a political action committee, Keep Florida Clean, Inc., which campaigns against the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Critics of Hope Florida argue that its operations are encroaching upon state resources. Notably, they point out that various state agency websites feature links directing residents to the Hope Florida Foundation, potentially misleading them away from official state services. Reports from WEAR News noted that at least three state agency homepages prominently display connections to Hope Florida.

During a recent event in Tampa, both Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey spoke to supporters about the foundation's purpose. Casey DeSantis stressed that the initiative is focused on serving the public, stating, "This is not about politics. This is about doing good on behalf of the people who deserve a chance for someone to fight for them." Meanwhile, Gov. DeSantis upheld his confidence in the program, asserting that it has effectively changed lives. He characterized the scrutiny as a politically motivated attack, stating, "Everything thrown at it is pure politics. I believe in this program deeply and I stand by it 100%."

Amid these allegations, questions remain regarding the federal versus state investigation dynamics. State Representative Alex Andrade, identified as a pivotal figure in the inquiry, has remarked that the complexities surrounding these Medicaid dollars suggest that a federal investigation might be the most effective avenue for accountability.
