Google Enhances Gmail with Automatic Summaries Through Gemini Feature

Last summer, Google introduced the Gemini feature in Gmail, allowing users to summarize individual messages and lengthy threads. This addition proved invaluable for users on the go or those utilizing smaller screens, like smartphones, helping them stay updated without sifting through every email.

However, an initial limitation existed: users had to manually initiate the "Summarize this email" process via the sidebar. This is poised to change as Google recently announced that automatic summary cards will soon be available to Google Workspace users.

Beginning this week, mobile users will see summaries generated by Gemini appear at the top of email messages when deemed helpful—particularly useful in lengthy threads or messages with numerous replies. Gemini's capability allows it to compile all key points from the email discussions and adjust the summary as new replies come in.

For messages that do not feature automatic summaries, users can still rely on the Gemini sidebar option or utilize the "Summarize this email" chip located at the top. At present, this functionality is confined to emails written in English and is rolling out progressively over the next two weeks. It is accessible for Workspace accounts utilizing both Android and iOS devices.

While initial user feedback suggests Gemini is a reliable tool, it is recommended to double-check the accuracy of AI-generated summaries. Users seeking to disable this feature within Gmail can do so; however, it's essential to note that this action would also revoke access to other helpful functionalities provided by Gemini, including suggested replies, drafting capabilities, and previous message retrieval.

To turn off Gemini, users can navigate to the settings gear icon, choose "All Settings," and locate "Workspace smart features," where they can manage the smart feature settings—providing them with control over their Gmail experience.

Desktop users have long enjoyed the Gemini-powered summary cards, highlighting the need for Google to integrate these advanced features for mobile users. With automatic summaries now seamlessly integrated into the Gmail interface, this move enhances the overall user experience, establishing a more cohesive Gmail environment.

It is worth mentioning that access to these summary cards may necessitate a specific Gemini subscription, indicating that not every user will have the feature immediately available.
