The variant was first identified in the United States during late March and early April among international travelers arriving at major airports in California, Washington State, Virginia, and New York City. Since then, additional cases have been reported in states like Ohio, Rhode Island, and Hawaii. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current number of cases in the U.S. is too low for meaningful tracking within the agency's variant estimates.

Situation in China and Hong Kong

Experts have been intently monitoring the NB.1.81 variant, which has rapidly become the dominant strain in various regions of Asia this year. In Hong Kong, authorities reported the highest levels of COVID-19 cases in over a year, with a substantial increase in emergency room visits and hospitalizations linked to this variant. In the past month alone, there were 81 severe cases and 30 deaths, predominantly affecting individuals aged 65 and older.

Meanwhile, in mainland China, the percentage of patients visiting the emergency room for COVID-19 has more than doubled from 7.5% to over 16%. Similarly, the portion of individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 has also increased, rising to over 6% according to state media reports. Interestingly, despite these concerning statistics, the local government has downplayed the danger posed by the NB.1.81 variant, suggesting it is not more hazardous than prior strains.

Medical professionals have expressed urgency in understanding this new variant, particularly as it spreads more quickly than earlier strains. Dr. Amy Edwards, a pediatric expert, noted that the current trends indicate higher hospitalization rates in regions already affected. Similarly, Subhash Verma, a microbiology expert, remarked on the variant's apparent growth advantage, suggesting increased transmissibility compared to other variants.

Notably, while the transmissibility is concerning, both Dr. Edwards and Dr. Verma emphasized that the severity of illness associated with the strain appears manageable, at least for the time being. Nonetheless, Dr. Edwin Tsui from Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection warned that this new variant “should not be taken lightly.” He cautioned that it might have evolved to evade some protections offered by current COVID-19 vaccines, calling for continued vigilance as health officials monitor the situation.

Vaccination Policies Under Review

The warnings come in light of recent announcements from the Trump administration regarding COVID-19 booster vaccines, which will now primarily be recommended for seniors and other high-risk populations. Additionally, the CDC indicated that it will no longer advise healthy children and pregnant women to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. This shift in policy may reflect a broader reevaluation of vaccination strategies in response to evolving variants.
