Dubai: The Saudi Roads General Authority launches ‘Wrth Saudi’ initiative to promote national crafts

In a significant step towards preserving and promoting Saudi cultural heritage, the Saudi Roads General Authority, in partnership with the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth), has initiated the 'Wrth Saudi' project. This cultural initiative aims to place informational signage on three major highways: Riyadh–Dammam, Hijra (Mecca–Medina), and Riyadh–Qassim. The project is part of the 'Year of Handicrafts,' designed to showcase the Kingdom's rich traditions while also updating the narrative with a modern visual identity. The signage will introduce travelers to various regional crafts such as Najdi door-making, clay construction, and the making of the traditional bisht cloak before they arrive at their destination. This initiative exemplifies a growing interest within the Saudi government to merge cultural heritage with contemporary identity, particularly as the Kingdom seeks to diversify its economy and open itself to global tourism. The amalgamation of art and practicality within the highway network indicates that heritage does not merely remain a remnant of the past but is actively integrated into daily life. Moreover, this effort aligns with further initiatives from the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts, which focuses on advancing craftsmanship and supporting local artisans. Its community programs are notable, as they empower residents, invite academic discussions, and promote hands-on workshops focused on traditional materials including stone, wood, ceramics, and metals. Looking forward, the Ministry of Culture has declared 2025 as the Year of Handicrafts, pledging to enhance the practice of these skills with a series of exhibitions, competitions, and educational programs. This further highlights an intent to merge cultural preservation with modernization efforts and suggests a longer-term vision for the role of handicrafts in defining Saudi national identity.
