Organized Team Activities: Day 5 Observations

The Cleveland Browns are currently in the midst of their second week of organized team activities (OTAs). These practices serve as critical opportunities for evaluation and preparation before the mandatory minicamp scheduled for June 10-12.

On Day 5 of OTAs, several noteworthy developments emerged as the team employed a dual-field drill approach. This strategy allowed them to maximize repetitions among all four quarterbacks. During various drills, including 7-on-7 and 11-on-11, QB Joe Flacco and QB Kenny Pickett showcased their skills on one field, while QB Dillon Gabriel and QB Shedeur Sanders took their turns on an adjacent field.

Quarterback Highlights

Kenny Pickett emerged prominently during the early stages of practice, taking multiple reps in 11-on-11 drills. He connected with RB Pierre Strong Jr. for a short gain and found RB Quinshon Judkins, who displayed impressive agility to navigate through the defense. Flacco, meanwhile, also had notable moments, successfully handing off to Judkins for a significant play. He later connected with RB Ahmani Marshall and WR Kaden Davis, culminating in a touchdown pass to WR Cade McDonald.

Meanwhile, Gabriel and Sanders also demonstrated their abilities in the ensuing drills. Gabriel completed short passes to TE Harold Fannin Jr. and RB Jerome Ford, while Sanders managed a sideline completion to WR Gage Larvadain, although another hoped-for touchdown to Davis was nullified as Davis stepped out of bounds.

In a specialized red zone drill, Pickett excelled again, delivering a touchdown pass to WR Jerry Jeudy, while Flacco successfully connected with RB Dylan Sampson for another scoring play. Gabriel and Sanders contributed as well, each finding McDonald for successful passes in their respective reps.

Fluid Quarterback Rotation

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees emphasized the dynamic nature of the quarterback rotation during OTAs. He noted, "These days we have probably the most reps to go around, so we're able to balance them out," highlighting the importance of continued evaluation in determining the depth chart. This fluid rotation is critical as each quarterback vies for a more prominent role as the offseason program progresses.

Defense Looking Strong

On the defensive side, DT Mason Graham has drawn attention during individual drills, receiving guidance from defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz noted Graham's potential, indicating that he must adapt his playing style to match the Browns' penetrating defense. Schwartz's enthusiasm suggests that once Graham fully acclimates, his production could significantly improve.

The defense has shown promise overall, with DE Ogbo Okoronkwo and DE Julian Okwara demonstrating the capability for sacks during drills. However, the defense did experience some near-misses, with both Pickett and Flacco almost intercepted during key moments, a reminder of the challenges that come with honing their skills under pressure.

Shedeur Sanders: The Rookie's Challenge

For Shedeur Sanders, the path remains challenging as he looked to solidify his spot in the quarterback competition. Despite not taking first-team reps, Sanders completed 9 of 14 passes with three touchdowns and an interception during drills. His skills are under keen observation, especially given his notable background and his fourth-round selection in the draft. While it is uncommon for a fifth-round quarterback to receive this level of scrutiny, his performance merits attention.

Despite the excitement around his highlights, it’s essential to temper expectations. Sanders's interception came on a tipped pass, highlighting some rookie growing pains. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees acknowledged Sanders' work ethic and mental preparation, indicating that as the rookie becomes more familiar with the system, the game should become easier for him.

As Sanders navigates his first offseason with the team, his progress will be closely monitored. The schedule ahead is demanding, but there's little doubt that the training room will remain a focal point for all quarterbacks in the quest to gain an edge leading into the season.
