Body Recovered After Search Operation in Darwin Harbour

Body Recovered After Extensive Search in Darwin Harbour

The Northern Territory (NT) Police Force has confirmed the recovery of a male's body following a thorough search and rescue operation in Darwin Harbour. This operation began late last night and extended into the early morning hours.

Initially, various resources, including the NT Police Search and Rescue Section, a Careflight helicopter, and personnel from the Port Authority, were deployed in a bid to locate the missing individual. Despite their efforts, they were unable to find any trace of the male who had been reported missing.

Early this morning, an intensified search effort was launched, which consisted of:

  • Two helicopters
  • Two NT Police vessels
  • Surf Life Saving teams
  • NT Emergency Service volunteers
  • Crocodile Management specialists
  • NT Police officers conducting foot patrols along nearby coastlines

At approximately 11:30 AM, a body was discovered in the water near East Arm Wharf. Responding promptly, the NT Police vessel Mick Read retrieved the body. Authorities have stated that the deceased matches the description of a male who reportedly jumped off the Channel Island Bridge around 9:40 PM the previous evening.

A report is currently being prepared for the coroner to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a note of gratitude, the NT Police expressed their appreciation to all the supporting agencies and community members who assisted in the search efforts throughout Darwin Harbour.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers present in aquatic environments and highlights the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in emergency situations.
