BMW Unveils the M2 Racing: A More Accessible Entry-Level Race Car

BMW has officially introduced the M2 Racing, an entry-level race car designed for private teams, set to debut in the 2026 racing season. Priced at €98,000 (approximately $111,421), this car diverges from the traditional inline-six engine configuration seen in the road-going M2 models, opting for a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine instead. It delivers 313 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, enabling speeds of over 168 miles per hour. The decision to use the four-cylinder engine is strategically aimed at reducing operating costs, making it easier and less expensive for teams to maintain and repair, especially in the high-stakes environment of racing. Designed with grassroots motorsport in mind, the M2 Racing features several upgrades for track performance, such as a mechanical differential lock, KW shock absorbers, and adjustable anti-roll bars. Its lightweight construction, at 1,498 kg (approximately 3,300 lbs), leverages the lighter engine for improved drivability. This car is not only a nod to BMW's motorsport heritage but aims to expand its reach to a broader audience of amateur and professional racers alike. The development process has included extensive testing, with factory drivers participating in trials to optimize key performance attributes. Jens Klingmann, a BMW M works driver, emphasizes the car's accessibility for both novice drivers and seasoned racers, highlighting that it retains the thrill synonymous with BMW M vehicles. Furthermore, the M2 Racing is engineered to comply with a variety of racing regulations, allowing participation in various national and international competitions.
