Baeza Aims for Glory in 2025 Belmont Stakes; The Battle with Sovereignty and Journalism Intensifies

Stage Set for the Belmont Stakes

Saratoga Springs, NY — The anticipation builds for the 2025 Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, where the spotlight is cast upon the formidable contenders. While the predominant focus has been on the rematch between Sovereignty, winner of the GI Kentucky Derby, and Journalism, champion of the GI Preakness Stakes, Baeza, a rising star from the C R K Stable, aims to carve out his own path in this prestigious race.

Lee Searing, representing C R K Stable alongside the colt's breeder Robert Clay, points out that the narrative should encompass not just Sovereignty and Journalism but also Baeza. "They talk about the challenge of the two of them. I think it's more the challenge of the three of us," noted Searing, emphasizing confidence in Baeza's capabilities.

Analyzing Baeza's Journey

Baeza displayed a commendable performance in the Derby, finishing third despite a challenging trip. He crossed the line just 1 ¾ lengths behind Sovereignty and a mere neck behind Journalism, showcasing his perseverance after starting from the difficult post 19. "We had one of the best riders in the world riding him, and he blames himself for the path he took," Searing reflected, underscoring the potential for a stronger performance in the Belmont.

This is not the first time Baeza has displayed promise. Previously, he claimed second place behind Journalism during his stakes debut at the GI Santa Anita Derby, setting the stage for what his connections hope will be a triumphant showing at Saratoga.

Strong Bloodlines and High Expectations

Hailing from the first crop of the stallion McKinzie and with a sale price of $1.2 million at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling sale, Baeza's pedigree raises expectations. His dam, Puca, has already produced noteworthy champions, including 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage and last year’s Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch. Winning the Belmont would mark a significant milestone in the bloodline, potentially establishing Puca as the first broodmare with three victors in Triple Crown races.

Searing reflects on his lifelong dream of winning the Kentucky Derby, noting the challenges faced in prior attempts. "We've had four and we haven't had a clean trip yet. It's a dream to win it," he admitted, while expressing optimism for Baeza's chances.

The Competition

As the competitors prepare for the Belmont Stakes, the odds appear fierce. Journalism enters the race as the slight favorite at 8-5, having navigated successfully through his prior races. Sovereignty follows closely as a 2-1 contender, seeking redemption after skipping the Preakness to strategize for this pivotal event. Meanwhile, Baeza is positioned as the third choice at 4-1, showcasing the competitive nature of the field.

In total, eight horses will take to the track this Saturday. Notably, Baeza's connections indicate that a clean run on a favorable track could lead to an exhilarating contest. "With a good track and a clean trip, it's gonna be a really good horse race. But I think we got a really good horse," Searing affirmed.
